Brenton Awa wins Republican Primary for State Senate

The Kahalu'u resident and Kahuku graduate faces incumbent Sen. Gil Riviere (D) in November's General Election.


August 14, 2022 - Primary Election - Former KITV anchorman Brenton Awa picked up 74% of votes Saturday night in his bid to represent District 23 in Hawaii's State Senate.


Awa's 2,970 votes put him well ahead of opponent Art Hannemann who received 1,041 votes. 6% of votes were left blank.


Awa faces incumbent Gil Riviere (D) who has held the seat since 2014.





District 23 covers more than half of Windward Oahu, and all of the North Shore up through Schofield/Kunia Camp.


Following the 2022 state reapportionment, District 23 expanded into Kaneohe and now includes all of Ahuimanu, Temple Valley, and all Kaneohe communities mauka of Kahekili Highway to the Likelike Highway. The district also expanded into Wahiawa to include Lake View Circle.
